After meeting, Hamas politburo supports Abbas-Mashaal deal
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-22 23:16

Hamas has apparently ended its differences Wednesday on a transitional deal the head of the movement, Khaled Mashaal, signed with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of the rival Fatah movement.

The political bureau of Hamas met in the Egyptian capital of Cairo Wednesday with its Gaza-based members and their exiled colleagues to discuss the agreement.

Hamas' news website published a statement after the meeting, saying that the conferees "emphasized the necessity of true and honest implementation" of the reconciliation agreements that were either reached in Cairo or Doha.

Earlier this month, Abbas and Mashaal reached the agreement under a Qatari auspices to form an interim government in a renewed effort to reconcile the two parties and restore political unity for the Palestinian territories.

The deal allows Hamas and Fatah to implement a broader pact Egypt has brokered in May 2011.

Some Gaza-based leaders of Hamas voiced opposition to the Doha agreement, saying Mashaal has signed it without consulting them and that the deal exceeds the original pact that Egypt has brokered.

"This statement is an evidence that there is no split or differences inside the movement concerning the Doha declaration," Salah al-Bardaweel, a Hamas official in Gaza, told Xinhua.

Later on Wednesday, Abbas and Mashaal are set to meet in Cairo for more discussions.
