CSTO calls for "soonest" settlement to Syria crisis
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-25 02:40

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) issued a special statement on Friday calling for the "soonest settlement" to the crisis in Syria.

Representatives from six CSTO member states -- Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan -- expressed their deep concerns over the situation in Syria.

The representatives said that they support "the soonest settlement to the crisis by the Syrians with the observation of the Syrian government."

They also support efforts to facilitate a peaceful settlement in the violence-torn country.

"We think it necessary to end violence in the country, to start a broad political dialogue between the authorities and the opposition without preconditions and to continue political and socio-economic reforms in the interests of all Syrians," they said in the statement.

The CSTO also called on the international community to facilitate such a settlement in strict compliance with international laws and the UN Charter.

The seven-member CSTO, which also includes Uzbekistan, is an intergovernmental military alliance founded in 1992.
