Israel blames India for hiding findings on attacks against diplomats
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-27 08:51

Indian intelligence services are not releasing evidence linking Iran with this month's New Delhi terror attack in order to avoid a possible political conflict of interest, an Israeli security source on Sunday said.

Tal Yehoshua-Koren, the wife of an Israeli military attache, and three others were injured in the Feb. 13 bombing attack when a man on a motorcycle attached an explosive device to the back of her diplomatic vehicle before fleeing.

Both Israel and the United States are assisting local security forces in the investigation, which have, so far, found the motorcycle used in the attack and the bombers path to India.

"They know Iran is behind the attack," the source told the Ha'aretz daily, adding, "They got to the suspects and carried out arrests. The picture is totally clear to all the officials in India up to the level of the Interior Minister, but they're not publicizing it."

He explained that the Indian security services have declared that the case is still under investigation in order to delay publishing details of the attack.

"The Indians understand that if they release the details they have, they won't have a choice but to take steps such as expelling the Iranian ambassador. At this stage, they prefer to avoid such a crisis with Iran," the source added.

A political source familiar with the issue told Xinhua that "It is obvious the Iranians are behind the attacks and there's no use and no sense in hiding it."

He pointed out that Israel believes that the Indian authorities will eventually publish the findings of the investigation, and will do so at their own time.

"It is a political game. If the Indians already know that the Iranians are behind it, they can use it as a card in order to promote their interests with Iran," the source said.

A second political source supported this thesis, and added that "From what I hear, the Israeli authorities are giving it some more time. It is clear to everyone that Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps is behind it."

In response to the claims, officials at Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Xinhua that "We are not familiar with the details mentioned. We trust the authorities in India to do all that is needed in order to bring the people involved to justice."

Other Israeli diplomats refused to answer Xinhua's inquiry on the topic, stating the issue is "sensitive."

Xinhua on Sunday called the Indian embassy in Tel Aviv in a request for comment, but was told that no one was available since it was a holiday.

India on Thursday joined an appeal by Israel and the United States to the UN Security Council to condemn the terror attacks.

"There was no way India could stay away from supporting the statement, given that Indian citizens had been injured in the attack, but India was insistent that Iran not be mentioned by name since investigations into the incident had not yet been completed, " the Times of India reported on Thursday.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman reacted strongly to the attacks, saying that Israel knew the attackers' identity and won't let them get away. Indian Minister of External Affairs S. M. Krishna spoke with Lieberman, promising to keep him posted as the investigation develops.
