Iran dismisses Britain's claims on parliamentary elections

Iranian Foreign Ministry on Sunday dismissed British Foreign Secretary William Hague's criticism on Iran's parliamentary elections as "interference."

After the Iranian parliamentary elections on Friday, Hague was quoted by media as saying that the elections were not "free and fair."

In a statement posted on the Iranian foreign ministry's website, the ministry's spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast dismissed Hague's remarks as "interference" in Iran's internal affairs.

"In his remarks, Mr. Hague tried to undermine the glory of ( Iranian) people's mass participation in a free and fair parliamentary elections in Iran," Mehmanparast said.

"We advice the British officials to avoid the past grave mistakes... about the Islamic republic and respect the Iranians' elections and bow to the greatness of Iranians and their powerful move in defending their independence and their national interests, " he said.

Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar said Saturday that the turnout of Friday's parliamentary elections was more than 64 percent out of some 48 million eligible voters.

"The preliminary data shows that the participation of people nationwide was 64.2 percent, which is unimaginable," said Mohammad- Najjar.

He added Iran's "enemies" invested a lot to discourage people from participating in the elections, but the people disappointed them by the high turnout.

There was no independent observers to confirm the turnout in the elections.

On Thursday, Iran's Guardians Council spokesman Abbas-Ali Kadkhodai disapproved of calls for international observers for the elections, saying that Iran considers it disgraceful and "an insult" for the sovereignty of a country that considers itself as independent.
