Palestinians discontent for U.S. ignorance of Mideast peace
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-05 19:42

The Palestinian leadership is discontent because U.S. President Barack Obama and Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu would not discuss stalled Middle East peace process when they meet, sources said Monday.

Netanyahu and the U.S. president will meet Monday at the White House, with Iran's nuclear program dominating the discussions.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas "is very dissatisfied for neglecting the Palestinian-Israeli issue despite the severe crisis it faces," the sources told Xinhua.

Abbas believes that the U.S. administration is busy assuring Israel that Iran would be kept out from getting nuclear weapons, adding that this led to a complete ignorance of the peace process, according to the sources.

The peace talks stopped in 2010, owing to Palestinian rejection of Jewish settlement building in the West Bank.

The sources said the Palestinian leadership was "frustrated" and this encourages it to look for alternative future paths, including renewing efforts to obtain state recognition from the United Nations.

On Sunday, Abbas met U.S. Consul General Daniel Rubinstein and criticized Washington for not paying enough attention to the stalled peace negotiations.

Abbas told Rubinstein that his administration must intervene to force Israel respect deals, accept the two-state solution and freeze settlement building to resume the peace talks.
