Russia will meet with Arab League foreign ministers in Cairo on Saturday to discuss the Syrian situation, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday.
"I especially value today's chance to prepare for a meeting of the foreign ministers of Russia and the Arab League states that will be held in Cairo on March 10," Lavrov said after talks with Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh.
Lavrov also called upon all parties in Syria to cease fire immediately.
"Information coming from various sources is not very much hopeful from the point of the main task - stopping violence," he said.
Lavrov said that Moscow had information about Syrian opposition forces receiving arms and supporters from other countries.
"Having agreed there is a necessity to demand from the Syrian government to stop fighting in the towns, we suppose the other side must do the same," the foreign minister said.
Violence must be stopped in Syria regardless of its origination, Lavrov said, stressing that both Russia and Jordan support a quick beginning to a humanitarian mission in the embattled country led by UN envoy Valery Amos. |
