Oman newspaper calls for talks between Syrian opposition, government
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-08 09:57
The Al-Watan newspaper in Oman has urged the Syrian opposition to drop their weapons and carry out transparent, candid and constructive dialogue with the government.

A recent commentary in the newspaper said that armed opposition should not regard Syrian government forces' retaking of the Baba Amr district in Homs as "a failure which needs to be followed by retaliation" because Syrians are still trying to gain their legitimate rights through peaceful means.

The commentary stressed that the opposition should not consider an acceptance of talks as a failure. Rather, the opposition will grow more important in the eyes of Syrians if they choose dialogue because that would show that they value life and the unity of their home country.

Of course, if this should be the position of the opposition, it should also be the position of the Syrian government, it said.

Defeating the insurgents and driving them out of the Homs district Baba Amr is not the only safe way out of the current Syrian crisis, the commentary said. It urged the government to take it as an opportunity to start an inclusive national dialogue for a peaceful solution to the crisis.

"This does not mean weakness, but it shows that the government is keen on reform." But now the sound of gunshots and explosions has overwhelmed voices calling for reform, the commentary said.

"The Syrian government must recognize its great responsibility in creating a favorable atmosphere for dialogue, while the opposition must reject militarization of their movement and foreign interference." Only in this way can the conspiracy of the forces seeking to destroy Syria be exposed and defeated, the commentary said.

"Unfortunately, some of us are participating in the provocation of conflicts, consciously or unconsciously, especially posting some hostile information on the Internet or online social networks, fanned by media."

The commentary called for all Syrians to shoulder the responsibility and reach consensus on a solution so as to pull their country out of crisis as soon as possible.

In another commentary, the Al-Watan newspaper called on outsiders to not fuel the Syria crisis, saying foreign intervention would only excacerbate the already tense situation.

It is nothing new for the Arab world that some outside powers resort to military or provocative means to meddle in the internal affairs of other countries, the newspaper said.

All of the external interventions have brought dire suffering to the countries and their peoples, the commentary said.

Outsiders should refrain from provoking violence and adopt a wiser and reasonable approach to resolving the crisis in Syria, the commentary said.
