UN's Annan hopes his mission helps Syria
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-12 01:29

Kofi Annan, joint special envoy for Syria of the United Nations and Arab League (AL), expressed hopes Sunday that Syria would remain secure and said he hopes to be conducive in achieving everything that might lead to democratic reforms and maintain the respect of human rights in Syria, state- run SANA news agency reported.

Annan's remarks came following a meeting with Syria's grand Mufti, Ahmed Hassoun, and other clergymen from different sects in Syria. He said his mission aims to discuss steps that could help end violence and have an access for humanitarian aids to some areas in Syria as well as to start a political dialogue in Syria.

He added that he is hopeful that Syria would remain secured and "achieve reconciliation and tolerance and spread this atmosphere in mosques and churches... I hope we would work together to devote the feelings of tolerance, justice and heal injuries."

Annan, who is on a two-day visit to Syria to mediate the year- long crisis, said he had talks with Security Council members and EU ambassadors and asked them to cooperate to ensure peace and security in this country.

He said he met Syrian President Bashar Assad, some opposition activists and businessmen, and found that all of them want a " solution and to heal wounds," stressing that the Syrians alone are capable of solving their problems.

Meanwhile, Hassoun, on his part, urged all those who hold weapons to restore dialogues.

Annan will leave for Turkey Sunday to meet with broad-based opposition, and is expected to return in 10 days to Damascus to carry on with his mission to press for a solution to Syria's unrest.
