95 Syrian refugees enter Turkey on Monday
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-13 09:51

More Syrian refugees entered southern Turkey's Hatay province on Monday after the first batch of 31 people arrived earlier the day, making the total number reach 95, Turkey's semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

The Syrian citizens entered Turkey via Yayladagi and Altinozu towns in Hatay province on Monday, trying to escape clashes in Syria, said Anatolia, adding that the refugees also included five Syrian soldiers.

The soldiers, including a major, a lieutenant and three privates, crossed into Turkey through Hatay's Reyhanli town, it said.

Syrian soldiers were attacking the Syrian villages and those who were trying to flee to Turkey, Anatolia news agency quoted a Syrian refugee named Hasan B. as saying.

Explosions and gunfire in Syria could be heard in Turkish villages along the border, the report said.

Eleven of the 95 Syrians were wounded and were taken to hospitals, while the remaining 84 were settled in tents set up by the Turkish Red Crescent.

Over the last two weeks, nearly 200 Syrian refugees entered Turkey through the border areas in Hatay province. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in January that Turkey was sheltering up to 10,000 Syrian refugees who fled the unrest in their homeland.

Turkey, once a close ally of Syria, has repeatedly called on Damascus to stop violence against civilians and has imposed on Syria a series of sanctions, including an arms embargo, in protest of the Syrian government's alleged crackdown on opposing forces.
