Israel not to tolerate terrorists backed by Iran: PM
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-15 04:17

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday blamed Iran for the recent escalation of violence with Gaza, arguing that the Islamic republic is funding militia in the coastal strip and Israel will not tolerate terrorists backed by a nuclear Iran.

Speaking in front of the Knesset parliament, Netanyahu also lashed out at those who supported Gaza's disengagement in 2005, which prompted Iran's grip on the area and the consequent violence, the Ha'aretz daily reported.

"As soon as we were out, Iran went in," the premier said.

Moreover, Netanyahu reproached Kadima party for allowing Iran into the coastal strip, saying that "Iran was let into Gaza, but it wasn't we that let Iran into Gaza, it was you."

He also linked the latest round of violence between Israel and Gaza, that began on Friday and concluded on Monday, with the threat of Iran's achieving nuclear weaponry, which he deemed would further endanger Israel's security.

"Imagine that behind terror groups was a country calling for our destruction and armed with nuclear bombs," Netanyahu stressed. "An Israeli prime minister cannot hand over the ability to act against this threat to others."

As Netanyahu delivered his speech at the Knesset, three missiles were fired from Gaza into Israel on Wednesday afternoon, though no injuries were reported, only two days after an Egypt- brokered ceasefire was reached.

On Tuesday, up to seven rockets were launched from the coastal strip into Gaza, making Israeli officials wary of the recent truce.
