A United Nations agency on refugees said Sunday cash assistance to the poorest Palestinians in the Gaza Strip would not be suspended after more funds were secured.
The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) got cash to cover payments for more than 100,000 refugees for four months, said Adnan Abu Hasna, the spokesperson.
Each member of the poorest refugees category would be paid 11 U. S. dollar during the coming four months, Abu Hasna told Xinhua.
He added that the UNRWA will continue its efforts to reduce the deficit in its budget, noting that the agency has a shortage of 77 million dollars.
The cash assistance program was supposed to stop by the beginning of April owing to a lack in funding from donor countries. That announcement sparked a wave of opposition from Palestinian public committees.
In January, the UNRWA launched an emergency appeal for Gaza and the West Bank worth over 300 million U.S. dollars. |
