Turkey won't remain indifferent on Syrian, Iranian issues: PM
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-30 16:50

Turkey could not remain indifferent to developments in the Syrian unrest and Iranian nuclear issue, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday.

Turkey is thinking about how it could help to end the incidents in Syria and how it could help the formation of a government in Syria with the will of people, Turkish semi-official Anatolia News Agency quoted Erdogan as saying.

"Everybody has to do something. Turkey can not remain indifferent as a country that has 910-kilometer border with Syria, " Erdogan said.

There were steps to be taken and Turkey would do what it had to do regarding Syria, Erdogan said, adding that he hopes Sunday's " Friends of Syria" meeting in Istanbul would be beneficial.

Concerning the Iranian nuclear issue, Erdogan said he had expressed his view during meetings with Iranian leaders that "any regional instability would affect and harm all the regional people including Turkey and Iran."

"We have once more confirmed that we think the same and we have once more expressed our determination to maintain our concerted efforts with our neighbor and friend Iran to contribute to the regional stability and development," Erdogan told reporters in Ankara after returning from Iran.

He quoted Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei as saying that "weapons of mass destruction has no place and can not be used in accordance with Sharia rules," and said he could not claim that "Iran was producing nuclear weapons" after those remarks.

"The Iranian president also confirms the same statement. Don't they have the right to implement a nuclear program for peaceful purposes?" Erdogan said.
