Palestinians mark Land Day, six wounded in Gaza

Israeli soldiers stationed on the borders between the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip and Israel opened fire at hundreds of Palestinian demonstrators marking the Land Day on Friday, wounding six people, medics said.

Similar demonstrations broke out in the West Bank, mainly near Ramallah, where Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli soldiers clashed, according to witnesses, adding that dozens were injured including Palestinian officials.

Witnesses said the crowds of demonstrators were trying to approach Erez crossing point between northern Gaza Strip and Israel. Demonstrations also took place in east of the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis.

A medical source told Xinhua that six Palestinians were injured in northern and southern Gaza Strip by Israeli gunfire, including a young man, who was shot in his back and is in moderate condition.

According to witnesses, clashes are still going on between hundreds of Palestinian young men and Israeli soldiers.

Right after Friday prayers, tens of thousands of Palestinians, arrived either by bus or on foot at an area three km from Erez crossing to mark the Palestinian annually Land Day.

In the West Bank, local sources and eyewitnesses said that clashes erupted on Friday between young men and Israeli police and army forces near Qalandia crossing point between Ramallah and Jerusalem.

The Israeli Radio reported that Israeli police stormed Qalandia refugee camp and fired tear gas canisters to disperse dozens of young men who threw stones at the police.

An international committee for the march towards Jerusalem on Thursday called on the Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims allover the world to demonstrate to mark the Land Day.
