Palestinians protest U.S. top court ruling over Jerusalem-born Americans
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-28 21:33

Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) on Wednesday protested a U.S. high court ruling allowing Americans born in Jerusalem to list Israel as their birthplace.

"This is a dangerous, unprecedented decision," said Yasser Abed Rabbo, a member of the PLO's Executive Committee. "This will not change the reality of the international consensus that East Jerusalem is the capital of the forthcoming Palestinian state."

The U.S. Supreme Court made its ruling Monday in a case involving a nine-year-old American, whose birthplace showed Jerusalem without referring to a country. The ruling comes at odds with the long-standing U.S. policy that doesn't recognize Jerusalem as the actual capital of Israel.

The ruling allows about 50,000 Jews with American passports to list "Jerusalem, Israel" as their birthplace, according to Israeli media reports.

"This is a clear meddling in the political affairs of the Palestinian people and their conflict with Israel," Abed Rabbo told Xinhua. He added that the Obama administration "keeps pace with the current Israeli government for electoral reasons."

Israel occupied and annexed the Eastern part of Jerusalem in 1967. It considers the whole city as its undividable capital, while the Palestinians want East Jerusalem as their future capital.
