Hamas slams Israeli decision to renew detention of West Bank lawmaker
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-01 14:33

The Islamic Hamas movement, which rules the Gaza Strip, on Saturday slammed Israel's decision to renew the administrative detention of one of its lawmakers in the West Bank for another six months.

Hamas, which dominates the inoperative Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), said in a press statement that Israel renewed the detention of Hamas lawmaker Khalil al-Raba'e from southern West Bank for another six months.

It is the third time, according to Hamas, that Israel renews the administrative detention of al-Raba'e, who had been arrested from his house in the village of Yatta, near Hebron in southern West Bank, in December 2010.

"The policy of detaining our lawmakers and sending them to ready administration detention sentences aims at paralyzing the Palestinian parliamentary life in the West Bank," Hamas said in a statement.

Israel now has 25 lawmakers from the West Bank under detention, 22 of them Hamas members. According to Palestinian prisoners affairs organizations, Israel has sent 309 Palestinians to administrative detention.

Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails are planning a hunger strike soon against the Israeli policy of administrative detentions.
