Palestinians outraged as Israel blocks arrival of international activists
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-16 05:37

The Palestinian official and public bodies on Sunday condemned the Israeli obstruction of international peace activists from reaching the Palestinian territories.

The activists of "International Solidarity Movements," mainly from France, Germany, the United States and Canada, announced that they would like to fly to Israel's Ben Gorion Airport and then travel to West Bank to attend the inauguration of an international school and join a series of peaceful demonstrations against Israeli occupation and the expansion of Jewish settlements.

However, the Israeli authorities arrested a number of the activists at the airport on Sunday morning, and managed to exert pressure on various European companies to cancel the flights reservations of hundreds of activists and prevent them from flying to Israel.

Spokesman of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Ghassan al-Khatib told Xinhua that the PNA condemns with the strongest expressions the ongoing Israeli campaign.

"The Israeli policy aims at fighting any peaceful, legal Palestinian or international efforts which try to gain the largest world's consensus to condemn the Israeli occupation of our territories," said al-Khatib.

He said that the flights of the activists "is part of the peaceful struggle to confront the Israeli occupation. The Palestinian official called for escalating the solidarity movement and not to surrender to the Israeli measures."

Over the past few days, the international airlines, mainly European's, annulled the reservations of dozens of flights for the solidarity movements activists. Al-Khatib said this behavior "is not nice and expresses the airlines yield to the unjustified Israeli measures to fight the solidarity efforts with our people."

Meanwhile, the PNA Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Israel of violating the international laws of blocking the free movement of human beings as part of their humanitarian campaign "using unjustified excuses."

The ministry called on all countries to protect its citizens who express solidarity with the Palestinian people and the governments of those countries to officially condemn the Israeli aggressive policy on the international laws and guarantee the free access of movement.

Meanwhile, Palestinian lawmaker Mustafa Barghouti, chairman of the National Palestinian Initiative Party, revealed that some 2, 000 foreign activists had planned to arrive in West Bank from different countries.

The Palestinian Non-Government Organizations Network (PNGO) expressed its outrage following Israel's blocking campaign. It said in a press statement that "the Israeli campaign is of incitement and threats," adding that those foreign activists still insist to visit Palestine.

The statement called on the international community and all legal and rights organizations "to immediately intervene in to let those activists fly to Israel and travel to West Bank to bring their message of solidarity with the armless Palestinian people and help them to get rid of the occupation."

Earlier on Sunday, 14 foreign solidarity activists were arrested at Israeli airport. A police spokesman said the police decided to deny their entrance to Israel.

Gamal Goma'a, the Palestinian coordinator of the Popular Committees in West Bank, told Xinhua that Israel still insists on preventing any foreign activity that expresses solidarity with the Palestinian.

"This is really a clear violation of all the international laws and conventions," Goma'a said.
