Abbas: negotiations easier when Palestinian state recognized
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-09 08:27

Palestinian National Authority ( PNA) President Mahmoud Abbas said Sunday that recognizing Palestine as a state through the United Nations would make peace negotiations with Israel easier.

"The negotiations then will be between two recognized states: one of occupation and one under occupation," Abbas told a joint news conference held with visiting Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti.

He added that the Palestinian application to the United Nations for recognition of a Palestinian state on the lands Israel occupied in 1967 was not a bilateral act.

The Palestinians submitted their state application to the UN Security Council in September 2011, but failed to secure the support from nine of the council's 15 members.

The Palestinians now try to get the recognition in the UN General Assembly, where they have a enough majority to upgrade their status, but this remains closer to a symbolic recognition than a real one.
