Lebanese PM defends policies despite disputes, criticism
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-17 20:40

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Miqati defended on Tuesday the government's policies despite disputes within the cabinet, the official National News Agency reported.

At the start of three-day parliamentary session, Miqati admitted that there were disputes among members of his cabinet, but the government would carry on with its policies.

Miqati said he has exerted strong efforts to preserve stability by visiting the South and funding the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

Miqati defended the policy of distancing Lebanon from the crisis in Syria. "Some say the policy is a way of fleeing from one 's responsibilities. It is not," he said.

The prime minister also slammed criticism that his government wasn't doing enough to ward off rising fuel prices, saying the increase in prices was global.

Referring to the opposition's threatening of a vote of confidence, Miqati insisted that the political system is "healthy. " If the opposition seeks a confidence vote, "so be it."

But the opposition admitted that it can't force the collapse of Miqati's government given that National Struggle Front leader MP Walid Jumblat, who is a centrist, has announced his support for the cabinet.
