Lebanese Army has seized 3 containers of weapons and ammunition on board a ship it intercepted on Friday, a security source confirmed on Saturday.
The containers that were supposed to carry olive oil were instead filled with light weapons and mortar shells, the source said.
Lebanese Army on Friday intercepted the ship "Lutfallah II" in coordination with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon maritime forces after suspecting the ship was carrying weapons destined for the Syrian rebels.
The ship was later towed to the Salaata military base on the northern coast of Lebanon, the source said, adding that the containers were transported Saturday morning by military vehicles to a Lebanese army barrack in the north.
Media reports said that the ship had sailed from Libya and called at the Egyptian port of Alexandria en route to Lebanon. |
