Israeli cabinet approves alternative site for W. Bank settlement residents
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-29 23:44

The Israeli government on Sunday approved a proposal to establish a temporary housing site for residents of the West Bank settlement of Migron, after the Supreme Court last month dictated that the settlement must be evacuated by Aug. 1.

According to the government's decision which was unanimously accepted by all ministers, the new housing site will be established at the nearby settlement of Kochav Yaakov.

Migron was ruled out as illegal by the Supreme Court in 2011 after it was decided that the settlement, home to about 300 people, was built on Palestinian private land and would be demolished in April this year.

Nevertheless, the state filed a petition to delay the razing of the West Bank settlement for another three and a half years in order to give Migron's residents time to relocate to a permanent location, but were rejected last month by the Supreme Court, on the grounds that "all are subject to the law."

The court set Aug. 1 as the latest date the settlement must be evacuated by.

In a Prime Minister's Office statement, the government said the establishment of the new site will keep "with the outline that has been approved by the Prime Minister's Office in a manner that will allow the site to be populated no later than July 15 of 2012."

The statement noted that the Cabinet approved the preparation of ground for an alternative site in Adam in the event that the new site "cannot be made ready according to the timetable set by the court."

The settlement of Migron was built in 1999 and in 2006 rights group Peace Now filed a petition to the Supreme Court asking for its demolition.

Following the court's decision in 2011, a string of violent incidents against the Israeli army and left-wing activists were allegedly carried out by settlers protesting the impending razing.
