Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-08 22:36

The Lebanese army intelligence seized on Tuesday light weapons ammunition in northern Lebanon's port of Tripoli, the National News Agency reported.

The army said in a statement that the ammunition were hidden in a car being imported into Lebanon, adding that relevant judicial authorities have opened an investigation into the case, according to the report.

The Al-Akhbar daily reported in its Tuesday edition that the army seized "60,000 bullets from various calibers in Tripoli port" while Al-Joumhouria daily reported that there were "40,000 bullets for light machine guns."

The Lebanese army has seized on April 27 three containers loaded with light weapons and ammunition on board the ship " Lutfallah II" that carries the flag of Sierra Leone, while it sailed in the Lebanese waters. Media reports said that the weapons were destined for the Syrian rebels.
