Hundreds of Israelis on Tuesday night took part in a demonstration in Tel Aviv to protest against a unity government deal between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Kadima chairman Shaul Mofaz.
Protestors rallied along streets, waving flags and chanting slogans. Police detained several demonstrators for disturbing peace, according to local news service Ynet.
Some public figures, including former Kadima chairwoman Tzipi Livni and left-wing party lawmakers, came to show support for the demonstration.
"At the request of these young people, who care about Israel and are willing to fight for its future, and could not tolerate this morning's turn of events," Livni said.
Earlier Tuesday, Netanyahu and Mofaz stunned the political system with the unity deal announcement, given less than a day after a bill to dissolve parliament in order to bring about early elections had already garnered overwhelming support in its preliminary reading Monday evening.
The deal was reached following intensive negotiations that concluded at 2 a.m. Tuesday, and brings aboard recently-elected Mofaz along with Kadima's 27 mandates, making for a massive 94- member coalition, the largest in Israel's history and one that grants Netanyahu significantly enhanced political maneuvering and support for major potential domestic and international moves. |
