Israeli minister urges university to "reconsider" Nakba Day ceremony
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-13 22:52

Israel's minister of education on Sunday asked the President of Tel Aviv University (TAU) to reconsider his approval of a ceremony commemorating Palestinian " Nakba Day."

The university approved holding the ceremony on campus last week, but required the students initiating it to bear the cost of providing security for the event.

Minister Gideon Sa'ar's spokesperson on Sunday told the Haaretz daily that the decision was "wrong and outrageous."

Nakba, "day of the catastrophe" in Arabic, is an annual Palestinian event commemorating the anniversary of the creation of Israel on May 15, 1948.

The planned ceremony is expected to include a moment of silence, and sharing personal stories of families of Arab students who study in the institution.

Following the approval, the Knesset parliament's Education Committee is set to hold a discussion on the issue on Monday, and is expected to condemn public ceremonies commemorating opposing national narratives.

In a letter sent to the committee, the Association for Civil Rights in Israel said they are "concerned" by the attempts to cancel the ceremony.

"We see the attempts to restrict the freedom of speech only because the views and the stances that are expressed in this case are not the same as the majorities' at the current time in concern, " read a copy of the letter sent to Xinhua.

TAU said that "Following a group of students' request, the University authorized an activity marking the 'Nakba Day' next week. The procedure of the approval was conducted according to the law and to the University's regulations."
