Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-13 18:09

Israeli President Shimon Peres on Friday successfully underwent a 45 minute hernia operation under full anesthetic, and was released from the hospital on Sunday.

A statement from the Presidential Residence sent to Xinhua on Friday said that Peres, who turns 89 in August, began suffering from abdominal pains during a visit to Canada last week, but nevertheless pursued his original schedule.

Upon his return to Israel, the president was hospitalized in Tel Aviv.

The president's personal physician, Prof. Rafi Walden who oversaw the operation said the procedure "went successfully, and that the president woke up feeling well," according to the statement.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday night visited Peres in the hospital, and told him "you look great, the people of Israel hope you get well soon," Netanyahu's office said.

On Saturday, Peres asked his aides to schedule a regular work week.

"The president will host work-related meetings in his home and he is expected to return to full duty during the week," according to the statement.
