Islamic Jihad says prisoners' strike shook Israel
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-19 21:56

Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement said Saturday that the Palestinian prisoners shook Israel's position and forced it to respond to their demands.

"Today, we are celebrating the Zionist enemy's retraction by virtue of the prisoners' steadfastness and will," said Mohammed Al- Hendi, a leader of the group, during a rally in Gaza City.

The Palestinian prisoners' 18-day hunger strike, which ended on Monday, "forced the occupation to step back despite all means of deception it has," Al-Hendi added.

He stressed that armed struggle "is the only way to deal with the occupation."

About 1,500 prisoners joined the hunger strike until Egypt brokered a deal that met most of their demands, including ending the solitary confinement and the incarceration of Palestinians without a trial, and improving the day-to-day life in the jails.
