Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey urge Palestinian rivals to reconcile
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-22 05:32

Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey exerted pressures on the Palestinian rivals to agree on implementing the reconciliation on Sunday, well-informed Palestinian sources said Monday.

The sources told Xinhua that high-ranking Tunisian officials of the ruling party, the Egyptian security intelligence and high- ranking Turkish officials exerted pressure on Hamas to agree on implementing the reconciliation.

Following the moves, "Hamas accepted proposals of left-wing Palestinian parties, which were accepted two weeks ago by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas," said the sources.

The involved parties from Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey will observe the implementation of the agreement reached in Cairo on Sunday between Abbas' Fatah party and the Islamic Hamas movement.

The two rival groups agreed to start on May 27 preparations for holding the Palestinian elections and form a six-month interim government within ten days, according to Hamas and Fatah officials.

Last May, the two rival groups signed on an agreement to end the ongoing division between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, which has been going on since the Islamic movement had violently seized control of the enclave in June 2007.

In February this year, Abbas and Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal signed on a declaration of forming an interim unity government, which will be headed by Abbas to prepare for the elections and the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, a senior delegation of the Central Elections Commission is scheduled to arrive in the Gaza Strip on Sunday next week to start operating the office of the Palestinian CEC in the Gaza Strip.

Before reaching the agreement in Cairo on Sunday, and before the pressure on Hamas, the implementation of the agreements was stuck due to disputes on the preparations for the elections and forming the interim government.
