Hamas denies involvement in Grad attack against Israel
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-17 18:54

The Islamic Hamas movement on Sunday denied any involvement in firing two Grad rockets into Israel from the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula.

"The accusations that Hamas is behind the attacks are untrue Zionist claims," said Sami Abu Zuhri, a spokesman for the Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza.

Israeli reports said Hamas ordered Bedouin groups in Sinai to fire the rockets upon a request from the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) officials in Egypt.

The rockets landed Friday in the desert area, on the eve of the Egyptian presidential run-off between the MB candidate Mohamed Morsi and Ahmed Shafiq, the last prime minister of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's era.

"Hamas is a Palestinian movement resisting the Israeli occupation inside the Palestine," Abu Zuhri added.

After taking over Gaza in 2007, Hamas licensed the digging of underground tunnels between Gaza and Sinai. The tunnels were Gaza' s lifeline when Israel's blockade against the coastal enclave was at its height.

Hamas also denied reports by the Egyptian media that its militants entered Egypt through the tunnels to carry out terrorist attacks.
