Israeli jets strike militants in Gaza
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-18 15:34

Israel Air Force aircraft bombed a number of terror activity sites in the Gaza Strip overnight Sunday.

Among the sites targeted were a weapons production facility and a training base in southern and central Gaza. The pilots confirmed direct hits, according to an army statement.

The attack came in response to recent rocket fire toward southern Israel, the statement said.

Gaza militants fired over 275 rockets into Israel since the beginning of the year, 10 of which were fired this month alone, the army said.

"The Gaza border is simmering. Violence is routine and not all incidents, including rocket launchings, are reported," a defense official told Xinhua on Monday.

In a separate incident that took place hours before the airstrike, a gun battle erupted near the Gaza border after militants fired a salvo of mortar shells at an Israeli army patrol conducting routine activity along the border security fence.

The Jihad Jibril Brigades, a group affiliated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), claimed responsibility for the mortar attack, the Palestinian Ma'an news agency reported.

A Palestinian man was moderately injured when Israeli troops returned fire in the general direction of the militants, though it was unclear whether he was a militant or a civilian caught in the line of fire.

The army spokesman's office said Israel holds Hamas, which rules the coastal enclave, "solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from Gaza" and that it will "continue to operate against anyone who uses terror against Israeli civilians."
