Hamas says will help elections committee work in Gaza
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-27 20:41

Gaza's Hamas government on Sunday said it will facilitate the work of the elections committee as agreed with Fatah party of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The Central Elections Commission (CEC) will start registering new voters in the Gaza Strip in the implementation of a deal that Hamas and Fatah reached this month.

The deal, signed in the Egyptian capital of Cairo, allows the Palestinian adversaries to form a transitional government of technocrats, headed by Abbas, that will prepare for elections.

Ismail Haneya, Hamas prime minister, will meet CEC officials when they arrive in Gaza Monday "to emphasize that all facilitations are presented to their work in Gaza," said Yousef Rizka, an aide to Haneya.

Rizka was responding to indirect accusation from Fatah that Hamas was intending to obstruct the work of the CEC.

Hamas' previous refusal to allow the CEC to operate delayed the broader agreement that it reached with Fatah under Qatari auspices in February.

The recent agreement in Cairo also calls for starting the discussions to form the government together with the beginning of the CEC activities in Gaza.

The reconciliation aims at restoring political unity to the Palestinian territories, which were split when Hamas took over Gaza by force in 2007.
