Hamas supporters in Gaza celebrate presidential victory of Egypt's Morsi
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-18 20:50

Dozens of Hamas members and supporters celebrated Monday in the Gaza Strip after unofficial tallies showed that Muslim Brotherhood's candidate, Mohamed Morsi, won the presidential polls in neighboring Egypt.

In Gaza City, dozens of happy youths drove their cars and motorbikes through the streets, raising green flags of the Islamic movement and Morsi's posters.

Earlier on Monday, the Muslim Brotherhood announced that voting results of 97 percent of all polling stations showed Morsi won 52. 5 percent of the votes while Ahmed Shafiq, the ex-prime minister, got 47.5 percent.

However, Shafiq's campaign questioned the Muslim Brotherhood's claim of victory, saying that Shafiq has got from 51 to 53 percent of the total votes until Monday afternoon.

The final results of the presidential election will be officially announced on June 21 by the electoral commission.

Hamas, established in the 1980s by the Muslim Brotherhood, wrested control of the Gaza Strip from forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and his secular Fatah party.

Hamas hopes that the involvement of the Muslim Brotherhood in the decision-making process in Egypt will help it overcome political isolation and blockade imposed by Israel.
