Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-19 16:15

Lebanese Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji warned on Tuesday on attempts to slip Lebanon into a crisis and to link the country to the regional turmoil, the Assafir daily reported.

In an interview with the paper, Qahwaji cautioned from the fabricated tension across Lebanon, describing the current phase as "difficult."

He said "the army will not allow to be deviated away from its mission".

Lebanon has witnessed recently several security incidents in the northern city of Tripoli, in the Nahr al-Bared and Ain el- Hilweh Palestinian refugee camps and along the Lebanese-Syrian border.

On Friday, the army shot dead one Palestinian who was on a motorbike with no identification papers and refused to stop at an army checkpoint.

The incident caused a tense situation that resulted Monday in clashes during the funerals of the killed Palestinian when hundreds of protesters stormed an army post in the camp with stones and torched an army vehicle, which led to the injury of three soldiers.

The army responded and one Palestinian was killed and 10 others injured.

"The army is carrying out its tasks across Lebanon, particularly in the north and along the border," the army commander noted.

However, he said there is a "maestro" provoking the situation in the country to keep the army occupied in "marginal" battles.

"Everyone is responsible for safeguarding the country," Qahwaji said, asking the Lebanese to assume their responsibilities in protecting Lebanon.

He stressed that the army will strike back with an iron fist at anyone tempted to tamper with the security of Lebanon or threaten the safety of the citizens.

Qahwaji concluded "The situation is critical and all the Lebanese are partners in the mission to save Lebanon".
