Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-05-25 08:45

The Lebanese army forces clashed Thursday with gunmen in an apartment building in the capital Beirut, leading to the killing of a gunman and injury of another gunman and four army soldiers, the army said.

The army said in a statement that its forces arrived at the building in Beirut's Caracas-Rawshe after hearing gunfire there, and gunmen fired at the forces and tossed hand grenades.

The forces then stormed the seventh floor of the building, where the gunmen were holing up, killing a gunman and wounding another, the statement said.

An officer and three soldiers were also injured in the exchange of fire, it said.

In the apartment the army forces found the body of a combatant who died during the clash and a large amount of weapons and ammunition.

"The building concierge was arrested for suspicion and was handed over along with the injured militant to the competent authorities," the statement said.

Media reports said the arrested gunman, who is called Hani Ash- Shanti and holds a Lebanese passport, is part of a 13-member group affiliated with al-Qaida and is said to be linked to the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
