Hamas expresses mutual commitment to calm with Israel
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-21 09:54

The Islamic Hamas movement, which rules the Gaza Strip, expressed Wednesday conditional commitment to a calm with Israel, if the latter stops its escalation of violence on the coastal enclave.

Al-Qassam Brigades, a Hamas armed wing, said in a leaflet emailed to reporters that Hamas and other factions active in the Gaza Strip, are committed to calm only if Israel stops its aggression on the Gaza Strip.

Shortly after sending the statement, the group claimed responsibility of launching more homemade rockets called "Qassam" at Israeli army training posts and bases near the borderline between Gaza Strip and Israel.

"Resistance is to continue to defend our people with all humble means. This enemy (Israel) got confused before this resistance, and this battle won't stop because the enemy only understands the language of force," said the group.

Since Monday, the Gaza Strip has been witnessing a new wave of violence between Hamas and the Israeli army, where nine Palestinians were killed and more than 15 were injured.

The group fired a barrage of rockets from the enclave it rules on southern Israeli communities and Israeli army bases. Israel reported that five Israelis were injured, including three police officers.

"This round of confrontation with the enemy is the minimum standard of our power and this should be a clear message that the Zionist enemy should understand," said the al-Qassam Brigades leaflet.

The group also said that it positively responded to the "highly appreciated Egyptian efforts to stop the aggression on our people, therefore we and all factions are committed to end this round only if the occupation stops it."
