Israeli army requests billions of dollars to defend border with Egypt
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-28 20:39

Israeli army said that its annual budget requires a significant supplement in order to adequately defend the country's western border with Egypt against rising militant attacks and prepare for a future of uncertainty in relations with Cairo, local media reported on Thursday.

The ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak early last year has forced the Israeli army to allocate more personnel and hardware to the border to defend against increasing violence originating in Sinai Peninsula.

Israel contends it can cope with intermittent rocket attacks and cross-border attacks launched by militants from Sinai, but the security establishment here is reportedly losing sleep following the declared victory of Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi in Egypt's presidential elections earlier this week.

Morsi's victory speech, in which he said that Egypt would uphold its international agreements, a reference to the 1979 peace treaty with Israel, has done little to calm military planners here.

The army of the Jewish state said it needs 15 billion shekels ( about 3.8 billion U.S. dollars) over the next five years in order to revamp its deployment on the Egyptian front, local Ma'ariv newspaper reported.

Plans that were drawn prior to Morsi's victory call for bolstering the border with new weapon systems, electronic surveillance measures, ground monitoring stations, intelligence assets and personnel, including reserve forces.

The army's crack infantry units have been permanently deployed on the border since Mubarak's ouster.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak is expected to request the additional funds during the government's next meeting to discuss the defense budget. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly supports increasing military spending to protect the border.
