Two Israeli Navy officers died Wednesday morning in a car crash on the main coastal road south of Tel Aviv, en route to their base in Ashdod, the army said in a statement.

Two other passengers, also officers, sustained serious injuries when their vehicle apparently rear-ended a large truck traveling ahead of them and flipped over on the roadside.

The trucker told police that he spotted the vehicle in his rearview mirror before the military vehicle slammed into him, and then summoned police, according to Israel National News.

Police were probing the circumstances of the traffic incident.
