Israeli military reports tank targeted by Gaza militants, shooting on Egyptian border
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-01 19:21

The Israeli military said militants fired an anti-tank missile at an Israeli tank deployed along the border with the Gaza Strip early Wednesday.

There were no reports of casualties on either side in the attack, which took place near the Kissufim Crossing in central Gaza.

Army Radio reported that an active protection system fitted on the tank intercepted the incoming missile, which exploded in midair, although the military was checking the possibility that the projectile detonated prematurely.

Tuesday evening, Palestinians in Gaza fired two volleys of mortar shells into Israel. There were no reports of injuries or damage.

In a separate incident earlier in the morning, Israeli troops were caught up in a firefight between Egyptian security forces and presumed drug smugglers along the Egyptian border.

The incident started when Egyptian soldiers spotted the smugglers infiltrating Israel and opened fire in their direction, with some of the rounds hitting near Israeli troops operating in the area. The troops returned fire after thinking that they were under attack, according to Army Radio.

A military spokesman, however, issued a different version, saying the troops were traveling along the border on a bus and identified three men infiltrating Israel.

"The soldiers got off the bus and apprehended the infiltrators. The soldiers heard gunshots in their vicinity and responded with fire," the spokesman told Xinhua.

The army said it has opened an investigation into the incident.
