Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Sunday that Hamas chief Ismail Haneya has not been invited to the Non-aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Tehran, Press TV reported.
"Only Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been invited to attend the Tehran summit from Palestine," Mehmanparast was quoted as saying.
"No formal invitation has been sent for anyone else," the Iranian official said, adding that "If we want to invite a special guest other than the heads of state, the invitation must be sent via the NAM office in New York."
Earlier on Sunday, Reyad al-Malki, the PNA minister of foreign affairs, said he had been in contact with the Iranian Foreign Ministry and the General Secretariat of NAM, and had received confirmation that Haneya was not invited, a day after Haneya's spokesman said the Hamas premier had accepted an Iranian invitation to join the NAM summit.
The PNA and Islamic Hamas movement have been at odds over attending the Tehran summit.
Calling on Haneya not to attend the NAM conference, the PNA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad has earlier stressed that inviting the Hamas leader to represent the Palestinians "is a strong strike to the Palestinian unity."
Yet, Iran is considered the main sponsor of Hamas, the Islamic movement that routed pro-Abbas forces and took over the Gaza Strip in 2007.
The NAM meeting will be held in the Iranian capital of Tehran on Aug. 26-31, while heads of state and government are to meet on Aug. 30-31. |
