Rocket explodes near southern Israeli town
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-27 17:21

A rocket exploded in an open field outside of the southern Israeli town of Sderot Monday morning, no injuries or damages were reported.

The attack took place during the first day of school, as more than 2 million Israeli pupils returned to their studies from their recently-shortened summer hiatus.

Pupils from the area were evacuated into secure places, after receiving an alert from the Color Red alert System, the Ynet news website reported.

On Sunday, Palestinian militants launched three rockets towards Israeli territory, which hit a factory near Sderot. No casualties were reported, however, damages were caused to the factory.

Sunday and Monday's attacks have shattered the relative calm that was maintained in the past months with the exception of a Grad missile hitting the southern resort city of Eilat two weeks ago.

So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the past two days ' attacks.

Sderot, an impoverished community in southern Israel, has been targeted by hundreds of Palestinian rockets over the past decade.
