Palestinian taxi torched in price tag attack in West Bank
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-10-22 20:01

Vandals torched a Palestinian taxi Monday in the West Bank region of the Hebron hills, in an apparent "Price Tag" attack.

The vandals also sprayed slogans on a nearby wall, reading " warm regards from Etinger" and "Price Tag" as well.

The first slogan probably refers to Meir Etinger, a right-wing extremist, who has been recently arrested for his involvement in an attempt to battle security forces in the evacuation of illegal outposts.

"Price tag" attacks are carried out by extremists' settlers in the West Bank, mostly targeting Palestinian possession and property. These actions are meant to "extract a price" over the evacuation of Jewish settlements.

"We woke up in the middle of the night and saw the car go up in flames," Abu Sando Ra'ed, a member of the family who owns the car, told the Walla news website.

"We saw the perpetrators enter a white Subaru Station vehicle and flee the scene. Who could do something like this? What is this price tag?" he wondered.

Ra'ed also added that the family called the firefighters in the Jewish settlement of Kiryat Arba, however, they didn't arrive at the scene whereas Palestinian firefighters arrived Monday morning.

Also on Monday, police from the central investigation unit asked for the remand of two underage suspects who are believed to be involved in a series of price tag attacks.

Last month, Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovich announced that the police will set up a special unit to battle Jewish terrorism and price tag attacks.

In the past two years, only 23 indictments were filed out of 170 documented price tag attacks.

In September, a price tag attack took place in a Christian monastery outside Jerusalem, where unknown assailants set fire to a door and sprayed "Jesus is a monkey" on its walls.

There were also several attacks triggering Palestinian cars and property throughout the month of August, after the army closed down an outpost named Migron and evicted its residents to a nearby settlement.
