Israeli state attorney appeals acquittals of former PM
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-11-08 08:04

The Israeli State Attorney's Office (SAO) on Wednesday filed an appeal to the Supreme Court over former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's acquittals in two corruption cases.

The SAO also appealed Olmert's sentence over his conviction in breach of public trust charges, for which he received a NIS 75,000 (19,480 U.S. dollars) fine.

Amir Dan, Olmert's medial counsel, said in a statement that the appeal is nothing but a "personal and vicious prosecution against Olmert."

"Three judges have examined the cases against him for four years. They have looked into all the evidence while criticizing the SAO conduct in the matter," Dan said.

Olmert, who presided as Israel's prime minister between 2006 and 2008, was forced to resign following allegations of corruptions which started to surface against him.

In July, the Jerusalem District Court found him not guilty in the "Talansky case", in which he was suspected of receiving illegal donations of hundreds of thousands of dollars in sealed envelopes from Jewish American businessman Moris Talansky.

He was also acquitted from all charges in the "Rishon Tours affair," in which he was accused of double-billing reimbursement from public organizations, on behalf of which he spoke abroad.

He was, however, convicted of improprieties during his tenure as Industry, Trade and Labor minister between 2003 and 2005 for securing grants and tax breaks for his long-time colleague and friend, att. Uri Messer, and his clients.

Due to the light sentence he received, which did not include moral turpitude, he has been rendered able to return to politics.

Since then there has been growing speculating whether he will return to politics, and battle it out with current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for Israel's premiership in the Jan. 22 elections.

Olmert has claimed that he is the only one who can beat Netanyahu in the upcoming elections, and according to several polls, he and former Kadima chief Tzipi Livni can increase the center-left bloc in the Knesset (parliament) if they were to make a political comeback.

He and Livni are trying to focus their political agenda in light of their possible comeback on the peace negotiations with the Palestinians and by that differentiate themselves from other contenders.

Both have slammed Netanyahu this week for coolly shaking off a declaration by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday, in which he told the Israeli channel 2 news that his people are striving for peace with Israel, based on the two-state solution.

Olmert is also pending verdict in a different bribery case in the Holyland affair, in which he has suspected of expediting construction proceedings and smoothing planning objections for a group constructing an upscale residential apartments project in Jerusalem while he was its mayor between 1993 and 2003.
