The U.S. Congress is not a legitimate source to issue a permit for military intervention in Syria, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif said on Sunday.

Quoted by the official IRNA news agency, Zarif said international laws forbid a country from making military interventions in other countries.

"Only the UN Security Council can under certain circumstances issue permits for collective moves," Zarif said, adding that besides, any collective move for a military intervention "requires a UN resolution."

U.S. President Barack Obama said Saturday that he has decided to take military action against Syria but will first seek authorization from Congress.

The foreign minister stressed that "Mr. Obama cannot interpret the international laws the way that he wishes and cannot alter them willfully."

The U.S. president cannot resort to military force under any conditions, he maintained.

Moreover, Zarif said "Apart from the legal dimensions (of a military interventions), any type of resorting to (military) force in the region will set a fire extinguishing of which will be tough. "

Iran has warned that any war on Syria would have repercussions on the entire region.
