Jerusalem is covered with snow Thursday in what meteorologists dubbed the heaviest snow storm hitting the city since 1953.

The severe weather condition started on Tuesday night and intensified on Thursday. Storm hit Israel on Thursday and snow started falling on the high mountains of Jerusalem and in its nearby area as well as northern Israel.

In Jerusalem, school has been canceled and roads leading to the capital have been closed. The weather could affect the planned meetings between Israeli leaders and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who is supposed to arrive on Thursday evening.

According to a statement from the Jerusalem municipality, more than a dozen vehicles are shuffling snow and dispersing salt on the roads. In addition, Emergency Services teams are on stand-by to treat injuries caused by the stormy weather.

"At the moment, we're only in the initial stage of the present system," Amos Porat from the Meteorological Service told the Ha' aretz daily. "It will enter gradually with cold air, rain and snow and on Saturday the system will start to gradually decline."

The storm caused delays and cancelations of flights landing in and departing from the Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv, while the airport continues to operate.

Court hearings have also been canceled and the central bus station in the city was also shut down.

According to Meteo-tech, a forecast company, in the past three days 103 mm of precipitation were measured in Jerusalem -- equaling the city's average monthly precipitation in December.
