Iran's former vice president, Mohammad-Reza Rahimi, was jailed on Sunday over corruption charges, official IRNA news agency reported.

Rahimi, used to be first vice president under the former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was transferred to Tehran Evin Prison on Sunday, according to the report.

In January, Iran's Supreme Court sentenced Rahimi to five years and three months in prison and also fined him ten billion rials (about 364,000 U.S. dollars) on corruption charges.

Rahimi, 66, was also ordered to restitute 28.5 billion rials (some 1.16 million dollars) in allegedly illicit earnings.

A preliminary court ruling had handed Rahimi a 15-year sentence, but the Supreme Court commuted the term.
