India, the world's fourth-largest oil consumer, will not be taking steps to cut petroleum imports from Iran, despite United States and European sanctions. Indian finance minister, Pranab Mukherjee made the announcement on Sunday during a visit to Chicago.
The U.S. wants buyers in Asia - Irans biggest oil market - to cut imports, in a bid to pressure Tehran to rein in its nuclear ambitions.
India imports 12 percent of its oil from the Islamic Republic. Mukherjee said India cannot do without Iranian oil, at the end of a two-day visit aimed at wooing U.S. investment.
But new U.S. sanctions, authorized on December 31st, could make it more difficult for India to pay Iran for its imports. |
