The Kumtor gold mine in Kyrgyzstan could increase gold production by up to 7.2 percent in 2012 to 19.4 tons from 18.1 tons in 2011, the mine operator said Thursday.
The average grading of ore processed in 2011 was 3.79 g/t (grams per ton) and the gold recovery rate was 80.8 percent, the Interfax news agency reported, citing a report from the Kumtor Operating Co.
The company plans to spend 15 million dollars on exploration this year.
The National Statistical Committee of Kyrgyzstan said Kumtor accounted for about 11.7 percent of Kyrgyzstan's GDP and 26.1 percent of its industrial output in 2011. Gold accounted for 51.1 percent of Kyrgyzstan's exports.
KOC operates Kumtor on behalf of Canada's Centerra Gold Inc. Centerra is the largest Western company to mine gold in Central Asia.
Kumtor gold mine is an open-pit mining site in Issyk Kul Province of Kyrgyzstan located about 350 kilometers southeast of the capital city of Bishkek. |
