Turkish exports hit 12.6 billion USD in March

Turkey's overall exports increased 8.1 percent in March 2012 to reach 12.6 billion U.S. dollars, compared with the same period a year earlier, figures by the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM) showed on Sunday.

According to TIM, exports were up 10.5 percent in the first quarter of 2012 to 34.7 billion dollars. Exports over the past 12 months increased 15.9 percent to reach 138.3 billion dollars.

Automotive sector claimed the biggest share in exports in March with 1.9 billion dollars and was followed by chemicals with 1.6 billion dollars and ready-wear sector 1.49 billion dollars, TIM said.

Exports to Libya grew by 658 percent after a sharp drop due to the Libyan unrest, while exports to the European Union countries decreased 3.5 percent. Exports to African countries was up 59 percent and exports to the Middle East increased 22 percent.
