Cambodia's inflation rises by 4.8 pct.in 12 months

Cambodia's inflation rate had increased by 4.8 percent over the last 12 months, according to the latest statistics of the National Institute of Statistics (NIS) released on Tuesday.

From April 2011 to April 2012, prices for food and non- alcoholic beverages increased by 5.8 percent, price for rice increased by 6.4 percent, prices for meat increased by 10.9 percent, price for fresh fish increased by 4.4 percent, and vegetables up 8.3 percent.

"Main increase of meat category was due to increased price for pork by 13.3 percent and beef up by 14 percent," said the report.

It added that the prices for transport increased by 6 percent and the prices for vehicles increased by 3.4 percent due to a surge in gasoline prices of 8.8 percent over the last 12 months.

On Tuesday, a liter of premium gasoline costs 1.38 U.S. dollars.

The whole year of 2011, the country's inflation stood at 5.5 percent and is expected to be around 5 percent this year, said the institute.
