The U.S. auto giant Chrysler Group LLC is recalling more than 620,000 Jeep vehicles for airbag and power steering problems, local media reported Thursday.

The automaker is recalling more than 400,000 Jeep Patriot and Compass SUVs across the globe to fix airbags and seat-belt problems, including 254,000 in the United Sates, because of a software error that could cause late deployment of side airbags and seat-belt tightening mechanisms and that could lead to injuries in rollover crashes.

Chrysler is also recalling more than 220,000 Jeep Wrangler SUVs worldwide to fix transmission fluid leaks, including 181,000 in the United States.

The Jeep Patriot and Compass SUVs to be recalled were built from May 6, 2008, to July 20, 2012, while the Jeep Wranglers affected were made from January 23, 2011, to February 23, 2013.

Chrysler Group, now owned by Italy's Fiat SpA, said it is unaware of any injuries or accidents associated with either of the problems.

Early this week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) sent Chrysler a letter asking it to recall 2.7 million 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty for fire concerns. But the U.S. automaker refused NHTSA's request, saying the analysis of the fires occurring after rear- impact crashes that have resulted in 51 deaths conducted by safety regulators is incomplete.
