The number of people unemployed in Spain fell by 127,248 people in June, marking the fourth consecutive month of decline, according to data published on Tuesday by the Spanish Ministry of Employment and Social Security.

This decrease leaves Spain with a total of 4.76 million jobseekers in June.

The drop in unemployment mostly affected those people of 25 years or older who saw unemployment decrease by 93,287 people, while among the youngest (those under 25) it fell by 33,961 people.

Secretary of State for Employment Engracia Hidalgo said, "This is the best beginning of the year since 2006, when the Spanish economy grew by 4 percent, compared to the 2 percent contraction suffered in the first quarter of 2013."

Unemployment has been declining for the past four months because of the arrival of the peak tourist season in which employees need to take on more workers in order to meet demand.

Latest data from the Ministry of Tourism said a total of 5.8 million tourists arrived in Spain in May, a record high for the month, causing unemployment to fall in the services sector by 90,149 people in June.

Meanwhile unemployment increased by 1,470 people in the agriculture sector, while falling by 18,516 people and 13,405 people in the construction and industry sectors respectively.

The number of temporary contracts represented 93.16 percent of the total, while 6.84 percent were permanent contracts.

The data was published a day after the European Union's statistics office Eurostat reported Spain's unemployment rate reached 26.9 percent in May, the highest unemployment rate of the 28-member bloc.
