Organic farming in Romania will benefit from more than 200 million euros (270 million U.S. dollars) of EU funds in the next seven years, and the government is also considering fiscal measures to boost the sector, Romanian Agriculture Minister Daniel Constantin said Thursday.
"Organic farming has developed a lot and products in this sector went very much to export," said the minister, adding that Romania can create a country brand by promoting organic products.
According to him, some 200 million euros would be allocated for organic farming, much more than the current amount.
"I am convinced that support for organic farming will not stop here and the government will come up with fiscal measures to stimulate organic farming," said Constantin.
Romania has huge potentials in organic farming, with an area of 450,000 hectares certified for production in addition to another 250,000 hectares of grassland and a number of 26,000 registered operators in the system at the end of 2012. Romania export 80 percent of its bio products.
